AAC (Advanced Audio Coding) is a lossy audio format developed as the successor to MP3. At the same bitrate, AAC generally delivers slightly better sound quality than MP3. AAC is primarily used in the Apple ecosystem, as iTunes, iPhones and iPads, for example, use AAC as their standard format. As MP3 and, in particular, the LAME encoder have also continued to be developed, AAC and MP3 now exist side by side, with virtually identical characteristics.
When AAC was released in 1997, it was actually intended to replace MP3. The technology was more modern, the compression more efficient. However, AAC arrived a little too late; by that point, MP3 had already established itself. Even the term ‘MP3’ became synonymous with music files. Napster, the first portable MP3 players, and even the iPod used MP3 as their music format. Apple introduced AAC as the standard in the iTunes Store from 2003 onwards, but the iPod continues to support MP3 as well. Thus, the planned successor became a competitor that was never able to match the success of MP3. In particular, improvements to the LAME MP3 encoder ensured that MP3 was able to retain its position.
